Cukur jambul ceremony

By: Farah Nabilah

The cukur jambul ceremony generally coincides with the end of the confinement period (pantang) observed by the new mother, which lasts between 40 to 44 days.

Dates, raisins, tamarind peels and holy water - all  commemorate  the hair-shaving ceremony.

Grandfather plays a prominent role.

Baby is fed dates and raisins.

Baby's hair is shaven by Grandpa.

Next- Uncle shaves off a little hair.

The baby hair is snipped by family members and it is customary to weigh the locks and donate its weight in gold (or the cash equivalent) the the poor and needy.

Blessings are given by female family members.

It is customary for males and females to sit apart.
Prayer recital.

Baby laid down to sleep.
