The Power of Light: Points towards enlightenment

By: Lee Chia Chee

The power of light is the musical of religion in nature inspired by a Tzu Chi blessing ceremony in December 2012.

The original musical has 1008 performers from all over Malaysia.

However, The Power of Light has only 33 performers.

Its rehearsal on Sunday, January 20, 2013 was to ensure the performance goes well for a private company annual dinner.

The company intends to gain blessing and prosperity to its workers and its projects in 2013.

The annual dinner will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.

The Power of Light musical begins with a lit candle to bring in  light and religious view which represents life and hope.

Human beings suffer excessively because of attachments.

Life with direction is a life with meaning.

In the excursion of life... one needs to aspire towards being well-rounded.
First, one walks alone the journey - then, one finds company.
To give is to receive - like Karma - what goes around comes around.
Being disciplined brings peace to the soul.

Only then, we gained improvement, reflection and ultimately  derive wisdom.

When one lives true to his light - he will light the way to others.

The expansion of one's personal light - is an expansion of light over the universe.

Smokers banished to basement

By: Fakhriah Halim

“Although it may seem inconsiderate for us to be smoking near others who are having their meals, the smoking section at the cafeteria of SEGi was fine.

“We could have our cigarette together right after our meals and hurry back to class,” said Nurfazlyana Fathly, 23, ADP student.

Prior to the renovation in 2012, the smoking zone took up a quarter of the outdoor cafeteria space.

Since the allocated space was comfortable, smokers would only smoke there at the outside cafeteria.

However, after the renovation was completed, the entire open cafeteria was designated as a "smoke-free" zone.

The smoking area was then relocated to a small corner of the basement car park.

According to the Maintenance Department of SEGi University, the moving of the smoking zone was to provide a smoke-free, clean and healthy environment for the students and staffs in the cafeteria.

Smoking prohibited in outdoor cafeteria
“The new policy regarding smoking is great since it creates a more comfortable and cleaner space for everybody,” said a non-smoker Joshua Michael, 22, ADP student.

Reactions toward the new policy differ between smokers and non-smokers.

Mohd Ariff, 19, nursing student who is a non-smoker commented, “It feels better with the new policy since smokers travel in groups which makes it hard for some of us to ask them to smoke elsewhere.”

While some are comfortably happy with the smoke free ruling, others, especially smokers, had a hard time abiding by this policy.

“This smoking space provided is very small.

“It is near vehicles parked at the basement which could lead to complications if anything happens to these vehicles,” complained Mohammed, a foreign business student.

Despite the new policy, cigarette buds can still be seen at the former smoking section.

According to the cleaners at SEGi, they had to sweep and mop the cigarette buds and ashes scattered across the outside cafeteria because only a few students follow the new ruling.

Hilmiah Razali, ADP student shared her thoughts about the new policy as a smoker,

“Although I do follow the new policy and smoke at the basement, I notice that some smokers do smoke wherever and I understand why since it gets very uncomfortable as we’ll be sweating and annoyed by the condition after just a puff.”

“It gets very hot and cramped with smokers at the corner of the basement.

“Sometimes, I just have to take my smoking break at a place that I can sit and rest,” answered 24 years old American Degree student, Nabila Majnin, when asked about her reasons for the violation.

Gen Y entrepreneur

By Fakhriah Halim

Mohd Firdous Bin Kamarul Jaman is an ambitious young man who started his career in business when he was 15 years old.

He has learnt the road to success through his experience with people, travelling, knowledge and through a lot of bumps on the road.

This 22-year-old, successful entrepreneur has inspired young adults especially the next generation, to aim high for success and never give up.

Managing ‘Kursus Borong Cina’ (KBC) since year 2008 and has become the youngest partner in this family firm of Anzac Consultancy, he has indeed made it.

When he first started working for Anzac Consultancy, his brother let him run the KBC program on his own.

He grabbed the opportunity, taking it as a challenge.

“It all started when my brother, Jalil and I went to China and I thought we were just going for holiday but instead he brought me all around and showed me places to get products to sell in Malaysia.

“KBC is a program to help Malaysians start their own business utilizing products from China.”

With an active business-oriented mind, Firdous also came up with his own shoe brand called Thefta.

Three years ago, before he made his own brand of shoes, the young business man did not have any academic qualification.

Since Anzac Consultancy was a family firm that he ran with his big brother, Shahbudin Jalil, they worked hard together to expand the company, raking in big profits and expanding their network.

Although it may seem that money is his priority, Firdous’drive that led him to success is his family.

“Being the youngest out of five siblings has taught me so many things about people’s character, about the important aspects about life such as respecting, helping and valuing other people,” said Firdous.

“Therefore I do all I can to ensure my family is living comfortably and getting the best in everything since I am now where I am because of them,” he added with much gratitude.

Calm as the sea, bright and joyful as the day in the sun, and as matured as a ripened fruit, Firdous handles himself quite endearingly.

This young entrepreneur is is able to generate unique, interesting and big ideas.

He even manages to execute those big ideas and make them a reality.

“When you learn to talk the talk and walk the walk, you learn not to talk such big games with no win”, he said.

Although he did not have any qualifications or knowledge when he first started, he continues to value education.

He is currently pursuing a business degree in University Islam Malaysia (UIA).

“I didn’t get to continue my studies after high school due to financial complications.

“Now that I can afford it, nothing is stopping me.

Although I learn business through experience and people, I find that it is safer to learn from books and theories as well because I am sure I there are still things I can learn,” said Firdous.
